Allergies in Dogs

Conventional veterinarians and physicians have generally considered fever to be symptom to be removed as soon as possible. It is part of the approach that sees the symptom as the disease rather than as the body’s attempt to fight the disease. Homeopathic veterinarians tend to see fever as a good sign in many cases and prefer not to directly stop the fever, but to attempt to remove the need for the fever.

In many cases antibiotics are unnecessary, because either there is no infection or, if there is an infection, it is a virus infection and antibiotics are useless.

Actually, a fever indicates inflammation; this does not necessarily mean an infection-though this is the usual interpretation. A corollary is that conventional veterinarians generally see a fever as meaning an infection that must be treated with antibiotics. In their eyes, this is a method of removing the cause for the fever.

There are often accompany systems with a fever, and often there may be a better guide to the correct remedy. If your pet develops a fever with no other symptoms, a homeopathic medicine may speed the cure without need for antibiotics and without development of other symptoms.

Normal Temperature
            CATS and DOGS 101.5 F (38.6 Celsius)
FEVER – above 102 (38.9)

We do not recommend drugs to bring the fever down, as the fever is almost always a good restriction.
Some practitioners feel that transient variations occur and that up to 102.5 (39.2)may be normal. This is especially true for cats, as they may spike a fever due to stress upon entering a veterinary clinic. Dogs commonly run fevers of up to 104 (40) and occasionally will reach 105 (40.5). Cats commonly go up to 104.5 (40.3 ) and occasionally over 106 (41.1 ). I don’t believe high fevers are harmful and especially do not worry unless the fever reaches 105 (40.5) in dogs or 106 (40.5) in dogs or 106 (41.1) in cats, and only then if the fever is prolonged.

General Care for Fevers and Infections

If the situation get worsens at any time, stop the remedy assess the condition, change medicine and seek immediate help.

Let your veterinarian determine if the condition is serious if companion becomes listless and the fever lasts for more than a day or two.

Do not just keep giving the same remedy, as you may worsen the condition  Give immune-building herbs and vitamins. Astragalus and cats claw may also be of benefit; use this individually and dose as with the Echinacea or goldenseal. Yunnan paiyao may be used for severe fevers with known infections.

Give one of the following homeopathic medicines according to symptoms. If the fever does not begin to subside within twelve to twenty-four hours, change remedies or see your veterinarian..

Aconitum Napellus

It is especially useful if the animal was exposed to cold wind before the fever developed and if he is restless and anxious. I have found this remedy often helpful in animals with fever and no other symptoms. The fever may have come on suddenly.

Belladonna

The pupils maybe dilated, and the animal may be irritable, even aggressive.  These fevers are also sudden, but the animal is generally hotter (symptomatically, not necessarily higher temperature) and more agitated than those needing Aconite.

Echinacea

A herbal medicine very useful for infections.  These animals are usually fairly ill, with poor gum color and weakness. They may need veterinary help.

Ferrum Phosphoricum

The patient is often fairly listless and may be anemic. (you may see pale gums. If the gums are white than light pink, see your veterinarian.) you may see early signs of nasal or eye discharge. This remedy is indicated for many early infections and influenza-like conditions.

Gelsemium
It may be useful in early fevers if the prostration and weakness are profound.  These animals are generally weaker than those needing Ferrum phos. This remedy is most useful for weakness as a result of a prior infection from which the animal never quite recovered.

Sulphur Pyrogenium

Repeating this remedy without response may cause an aggravation. This remedy is often helpful for persistent fevers that weaken the animal. The gum color may be dark or muddy instead of pink. This remedy is helpful in those animals who cannot mount a good immune response. They often have marginal (low) fevers that will neither increase nor go away. These animals tend to be scruffy and dirty. These patients may have back pain along with the fever, and they are often restless as a result.
