Surgery is an invasive and even drastic measures, it is often a necessary solution to some conditions. For postsurgical bleeding, Phosphorus once again comes to our aid. Millefolium may help if Phosphorus is ineffective There are some steps you can take to improve your companion’s comfort and speed her recovery..

        Before any surgery (except emergencies), take time to have her in good condition. For a week or two prior to surgery, give her extra vitamins C, E, A, and B. For vitamins C, give her about 10 mg/lb twice a day; for vitamin E give 5-10 mg/lb once a day; for vitamin A give 75-100 IU/lb daily, and give about 10-15 mg of B vitamins per ten to twenty-five pounds daily. Continue this for a week or two after surgery as well.
  
     Other antioxidants can help also. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is very useful. Give 2000 IU or 125 mg elemental SOD (usually one tablet) per ten to twenty pounds daily, split into two to three doses. Coenzyme Q 10 may also benefit the surgical patient. Give 1 mg/lb daily.
 
        One the day of surgery, give Arnica 30C and Rescue Remedy (the Bach flower essence) before surgery and after surgery. These may be combined in a few pellets of Arnica into the bottle. Fill the bottle with water and then give several drops to the patient by mouth. If your veterinarian is cooperative, ask her to give this formula immediately after surgery and every hour or two thereafter for the first day. Continue for a few days, gradually lengthening the interval between doses. This helps with pain and surgical stress. Passiflora incarnata 3X or 6X may also be helpful during the trip to and from the clinic as well as presurgery, as it often provides a calming effect. Hamamelis and Bellis perennis are similar to Arnica and may relieve postsurgical pain if the latter does not prove sufficient.
     
   If your patient awakens slowly from anesthesia, the remedy Phosphorus will often speed his recovery. In this situation you may alternate the phosphorus with the Arnica preparation. If the recovery is especially difficult and his postsurgical weakness is profound, try the remedy Acetic acid. Of course, you will again need the cooperation of your veterinary surgeon here, as your companion will be hospitalized during the recovery period.

     Calendula ointment or gel is useful topically to ease incision pain and to speed healing. If the incision seems especially painful, try the remedy Staphysagria by mouth.
