Dog Anal Glands Natural Cures

Have you ever seen your dog scrape his butt on grass or hopefully not, the rug. Some cases I have seen little guys drag their butts on concrete... ouch!

Being part of the digestive tract, anal glands are suppsed to drain regularly when your dog passes his bowels. However, if the stool is too thin or not of the right consistency, the glands may not open and drain leading to discomfort for the dog. A blockage can develop as a result and this leads to the dog trying desperately to open the glands by scraping his/her butt on the ground. Not only that, anal glands give out a foul odor. The glands are located under the tail just inside the anal opening. If you're taking your pet to the vet to get the nails trimmed or ears cleaned etc, you can ask them to massage the anal glands.

Alternatively, if there is constant inflammation in the area, the anal glands may stay open and the animal starts leaking pungent fluids.

Swelling in the anal gland areas or scooting on the ground is a sign that the pet might be experiencing blockages.

Leakage - when anal glands are inflamed, the animal also tends to lick the area, and may leak a brown tinged pungent fluid.

Treatments for Anal Gland Blockages

Diet

Anal gland issues are digestive issues. Therefore, the solution is to treat the source and provide a diet with fiber, such as well cooked brown rice or psyllum husks. Acidophilus is also a great suggestion as it will help line the digestive tract with healthy bacteria.

Compress

A compress of chamomile tea and warm water will help reduce inflammation. After applying the compress, squeeze and massage the anal glands from the outside of the anus and gently squeeze both sides to help alleviate any blockage issues.

When your animal stops scooting and secretions stop you'll know the issue has been resolved.
