Raising a Healthy Puppy Using Common Sense

When I first got my puppy and was teaching it to walk on a leash, I read many sites for assistance in training. Unfortunately one site advised me that if the puppy was not responding, it would be a good idea to tie the dog to a tree and walk away.

How I regret not taking the commonsense approach and realizing that it would be cruel to tie a poor harmless 8 week puppy to a tree and walking away, even if only for a few minutes.

Well, I honestly believe those few moments created an anxiety in my dog and I will pay the price for the rest of my life as he continues to get anxious whenever I have to be away from him.

Why am I telling you this?

Please take the common sense approach to raising a puppy or dog.

Your dog will try to communicate with you and if you just learn to understand what she is saying, it is the best way for you and your pet to form a bond and for it to live a happy life.

Another Bad Idea - Electronic Fences

We moved to a house a few years ago and I wanted to let my dog run around without a leash and again, got talked into an electronic fence by the marketing spin on websites that sell these products.

Here is a truth about the Internet - People are willing to completely ignore the risks associated with a product if they can get a sale.

After spending over $250 to find a reasonable product, I was completely disappointed.

Firstly, it is cruel to tie a shock collar around your dog's neck!

After about five minutes I realized what a complete waste of money and cruel device this is. A good way to determine if what you are doing is to put yourself in your dog's shoes - if you were a dog, would you be happy if someone put a shock collar around your neck and you had no clue when it would go off?

The solution to this problem? Common sense.

I created a very very long leash and let the dog run with the leash either tied to a post. This allowed the dog to run around freely and I did not have to worry about the dog running away.

Prescription Drugs - Vets Are In Business to Make Money

If your dog is suffering from a serious injury or illness, then by all means, treat him with the best medical facilities and drugs may be a wise option.

But I see way too many people putting their dogs on lifetime allergy control drugs. In many cases, these drugs are steroids. Would you like to take steroids for life?

Be wise. Try the simpler wiser alternatives before you decide to go for drastic and expensive treatments. In most cases, your dog's allergies and ailments can be fixed with a few simple measures.

Bottom line: Our pets give us so much joy. Take the time to try and figure out what they are telling you.

If advice you receive on the internet or otherwise does not seem right, then don't trust it.
